Blackjack is the one casino game where your decisions change the maths. Played correctly the house edge sits near half a percent. Played on instinct it runs closer to two. Same table, same cards, four times the cost.

Check the blackjack payout before you sit
This single number matters more than every decision you will make afterwards. A natural blackjack should pay 3:2, meaning RM10 returns RM15. Tables paying 6:5 return RM12 on the same hand.
That change adds roughly 1.4% to the house edge, which is larger than the entire edge you are trying to minimise by playing well. Perfect strategy at a 6:5 table is worse than sloppy strategy at a 3:2 table. The payout is printed on the felt, so look before you commit. Live tables in the Puma777 lobby show it in the game info panel before you buy in.
The decisions that carry the most weight
Basic strategy is a solved chart covering every combination of your hand against the dealer’s upcard. Memorising all of it takes effort. Learning these six covers most of the cost.
| Your hand | Dealer shows | Correct play | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hard 12-16 | 2-6 | Stand | Dealer is likely to bust; let them |
| Hard 12-16 | 7-Ace | Hit | Dealer is strong; standing concedes |
| Always | Any | Split A-A and 8-8 | Turns a weak total into two live hands |
| Always | Any | Never split 10s or 5s | You are breaking up 20, or a strong double |
| Hard 11 | 2-10 | Double | Best doubling spot in the game |
| Soft 17 (A-6) | Any | Never stand | 17 loses more often than it wins |
Never take insurance. It is offered as protection and it is a separate bet on whether the dealer holds a ten, paying 2:1 on an outcome that occurs less than a third of the time. The house edge runs around 7%, far worse than the game you are already playing. The same applies to even money on your own blackjack, which is the identical bet wearing a friendlier name.
Standing on 16 feels wrong and usually is not
Hard 16 against a dealer 6 is the hand players get wrong most often, because hitting feels active and standing feels passive. You are not betting that 16 wins. You are betting that a dealer showing 6 busts more often than your next card saves you, and it does.
Basic strategy is not about winning individual hands. Many correct plays lose. It is about losing less across thousands of hands, which is the only timeframe a house edge means anything on.
Perfect strategy at a 6:5 table is worse than sloppy strategy at a 3:2 table. Check the felt before you check the chart.
Before your first hand
- Confirm the payout is 3:2. Walk away from 6:5 tables; nothing you do afterwards recovers it.
- Keep a strategy chart open. Playing online, nothing stops you. There is no dealer watching your screen.
- Decline insurance every time. No exceptions worth the words it takes to describe them.
- Bet flat. Doubling stakes after a loss does not change the edge, it just reaches the table maximum faster.
- Check wagering weighting. Blackjack typically counts 10% or less toward bonus turnover.
Why counting cards is not the answer online
Card counting works by tracking the ratio of high to low cards remaining, which only has value when the shoe is dealt deep and not reshuffled. Online blackjack against software shuffles after every hand, so there is nothing to track. Live dealer tables shuffle well before the point where a count becomes useful.
Play the chart, take the 3:2 tables, refuse insurance. That is the whole edge available to you, and it is genuinely worth having.
Blackjack: common questions
Does basic strategy guarantee I win?
No. It reduces the house edge to around half a percent, which means losing slowly rather than winning. No strategy makes blackjack profitable long term.
Why is 6:5 such a problem?
It adds roughly 1.4% to the house edge, more than triple the edge you face at a 3:2 table playing perfectly.
Should I ever take even money?
No. It is insurance under a different name and carries the same poor odds.
Can I use a strategy chart while playing online?
Yes, and you should. Basic strategy is published, not secret, and no rule prevents you referring to it.
Does blackjack clear bonus wagering?
Slowly. Table games usually count at a heavily reduced rate, so slots are the faster route. See the free credit guide for how weighting works.
Play for entertainment, never as a way to make money or recover losses. Correct strategy reduces the cost of playing; it does not turn the game profitable. Free, confidential support is available through BeGambleAware and GamCare. 18+ only.
